I recently saw some beautiful wedding pictures where the bride had bright white teeth. I asked if she had them professionally whitened and the mother of the bride said that she used coconut oil. I was thrilled because i had purchased some coconut oil from the Organic Marketplace in our town and plan to use it for better dental care and oral health.
Terri, it really is 10 to 15 minutes. During that time, your mouth will get fuller and fuller as more of your natural saliva is generated and added to the oil already in your mouth – by the end of the oil pulling session, you will have twice as much in your mouth as the tablespoon you start with, and this can be hard at first. I had to work up to that tablespoon to be able to keep it in my mouth for 10 minutes; I started with about a half tablespoon.
You may be able to get rid of superficial stains by yourself. A number of at-home tooth-whitening products -- kits, strips, toothpastes, and rinses-- may lighten stains. There are even some old-fashioned remedies you can try. Tooth-whitening products available on drugstore shelves use mild bleach to brighten yellow teeth. Toothpastes use abrasives and chemicals to remove surface stains. For deep stains, you may need a dentist's help.
Limit your intake of fruits that contain citric acid, such as oranges, lemons, berries and tomatoes. Too much citric acid can cause enamel erosion. However, don’t completely avoid these fruits unless you have a digestive condition or allergy. These fruits contain many nutrients that are essential for bodily functions and contribute to creating a strong immune system.
I had to get some partial veneers near my molars because a former dentist pulled one too many teeth and there was an awkward space left after I got orthodontic work done. So, I won’t even go close to these teeth with activated charcoal. Using the charcoal on teeth without cosmetic work is fine and my personal results were quite noticeable after three uses.
Thanks for the supportive words. It’s fine to oil pull with amalgam fillings. It’s important to grasp that amalgam fillings off gas 24/7. They give off more mercury vapor when stimulated. Most common ‘stimulants’ are hot drinks, brushing, dental cleanings, and chewing. I really don’t think that oil pulling would increase the risk of mercury vapor. And even if it did, my guess is the oil would tie it up and you spit out the mercury with the oil.
I think you are right on with your thinking here. Incidentally, on the Mohr’s scale of hardness (where diamonds are 10), ironically activated charcoal is only around 2. However, your point about RDA for charcoal is another subject all together. I don’t know the RDA for activated charcoal by itself, but my guess is it’s pretty high. My reasoning for this guess is a company who makes a tooth powder that uses activated charcoal as one of it’s ingredients states that the RDA for their product is 117. Yikes! Sure, it’s lower than some ‘whitening’ commercial pastes on the market, but that’s not a very high standard to judge one’s product safety.
When buying from a store, check the ingredient list to avoid sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). SLS is an artificial detergent that can cause sensitivity and mouth ulcers. It is used as a foaming agent in many toothpastes also. Instead, choose a mouthwash with a natural emulsifier like vegetable oil, sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), or sodium chloride (salt). Plant extracts such as peppermint, sage, cinnamon and lemon help freshen your breath.
This is the first I’ve heard of tumeric whitening teeth, but am not surprised. I recently got some organic rhizomes and am trying to grow, as well as drying to powder. Now I have another use. This is going to sound totally gross, but I am chewing a small piece for a couple of minutes before using your remineralizing tooth paste, (which is fantastic for whitening!) My toothbrush does not keep the yellow stain after using.
However, lemon juice is acidic. If we were in your shoes, we would not use lemon juice for brushing our teeth, because the acidity may weaken your enamel and increase your chances of damaging it as you brush. We explain more on acidity in our articles “How to Drink Kombucha and NOT Destroy Your Teeth“, “Can Brushing After a Meal Damage My Teeth?“, and “Tracking Your Saliva pH“.

The baking soda works on the enamel of the teeth to lift away the staining while the citric acid in the lemon juice provides a natural bleaching action. You can make a baking soda paste by adding some water to it, and use on your toothbrush, or you can blend the baking soda with your toothpaste. Step1 Mix baking soda and the juice from a fresh squeezed lime, you want to use enough lime juice to bring the baking soda to the consistency of a paste. You can use baking soda, instead of salt, to make it more effective. Different theories exist on the benefits of adding lemon juice or strawberries to baking soda for teeth whitening. All you have to do is take a little of baking soda and make a paste by mixing it with some water and a dash of salt.
Get enough Vitamin D. Vitamin D helps your body absorb and use calcium. It is also beneficial for boosting your immune system to fight against bacteria, viruses and free radicals that can erode teeth. Getting enough vitamin D can help you maintain a healthy smile, strengthen bones and even help prevent various types of diseases and cancers. Here are some ways to make sure you get enough vitamin D:
I called many American Companies like mountain rose herbs , redmond clay ,aztec clay and when I asked them about lead in their clay they said that every clay comes from the earth and that is why there is tiny amount lead in the clay, but it occurs naturally so it is bind with other elements in the clay and does not leak in the human body , so the human body can not absorb the naturally occuring lead in clay.
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral found in water. Toothpastes with fluoride help prevent tooth decay by strengthening your tooth enamel and fighting away bacteria that cause cavities. Fluoride toothpaste is also recommended for toddlers and children but in a lower percentage. Too much fluoride can weaken the enamel. For children younger than three years, an amount equal to a grain of rice is enough. For children aged three to six years, use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste.
In the morning, before you brush your teeth, scoop out a tablespoon or a little less (depending on the size of your mouth) of coconut oil. You can either soften it, or just put it in your mouth (I usually do the latter, and just let it soften.) Push, swish, and “pull” the oil through and around your teeth for 10-15 minutes, then spit it out, rinse with water, and brush your teeth.
I took tetracycline in the 70’s and ended up with a permanent yellowish color to my teeth. Lately I have been brushing my teeth with tooth gel (not toothpaste) and a dipping of the toothbrush in a little hydrogen peroxide at the same time. At first I thought nothing was happening, but after several weeks, I finally looked at my teeth and they were white! I was really surprised. Hopefully they will continue to become whiter. And, now I know you have to be patient!!! I plan to add baking soda, too. BTW, for some reason, toothpaste makes the inside of my mouth slough off, the same as another person mentioned above. So I have to brush with “tooth gel”, which is getting harder and harder to find.
Strawberries are high in Vitamin C, which can help break-down plaque that is causing your teeth to look yellow. It also has an enzyme called malic acid, which may help to remove surface stains. The salt acts as an abrasive portion of the paste, physically scrubbing away stain-causing gunk, and the baking soda is an extra touch that you can choose to leave out if you’d prefer (I just like to add it to anything involving my teeth.)
2. The second consideration on this subject is whether oil pulling is going to compromise any existing fillings (mercury or composite). This is another myth circulating on this subject. If a filling becomes compromised from oil pulling, then it was compromised already and the oil pulling simply helped it along its path to failure. In other words, oil pulling will not cause a properly placed filling to become weaker. However, if a filling is weak (and therefore should be changed as it’s not doing its job to restore the tooth), then we can see how oil pulling could further weaken the filling and increase its speed of failure. I consider this a benefit as the filling in question was already compromised and needs to be changed but we may have not been aware that it had already failed.
Oral irrigators are electrical devices that pump water in a steady or pulsating stream to flush out food and debris in pockets between teeth, or in braces. They also are used to deliver medicine to hard-to-reach areas. For example, prescription rinses can be sprayed into gum pockets with an oral irrigator. You can also use an oral irrigator with a diluted mouthwash, which is helpful for those who have dental implants or bridges.
There is a teeth cleaner for animals on the market by Virbac. I kept asking my one vets office how come they had this product with xylitol on the shelf. They said a little would be fine. WRONG! After my second visit and seeing it still there, I mentioned it again. They said they would look into it. MY third visit it was gone. This vet office has many new student vets under the main vet and they should KNOW BETTER. Please look further into this for humans, and do put warnings about it harming animals in your blogs, if you haven’t already. Thanks.
At-home trays: If you get them from your dentist, she’ll make a mold of your teeth to create fitted trays. She’ll give you a strong bleaching gel to use at home. Over-the-counter systems work the same way. But they can cause irritation and may not work as well. Some OTC kits come with a bendable mouthpiece. These work better than one-size-fits-all trays. The bleaching gels that come in these kits aren’t as strong as the ones you get from a pro.
If you have only minimal staining, whitening toothpaste is clearly the easiest way to whiten your teeth at home. Brushing two to three times a day can whiten your teeth four to five shades after about a month of consistent use. Formulas for tooth whitening toothpaste are all about equivalent in effect, but kids under 16 should not use them. They can cause irritation to the gums and teeth of younger kids.
Perhaps the intensity of the heat in the professional whitening lights is the culprit? Or maybe your sensitivity and irritation is caused by the caustic breakdown of the carbamide peroxide formula used in tray and gel whitening methods? No matter what the source of the discomfort is, here are some facts to help guide you in making the right choice when it comes to your preferred method of whitening:
To oil pull, simply put a spoonful of coconut oil in your mouth and swish it between your teeth for five to 20 minutes, or add a few drops to your toothbrush and brush it on. Another oral care option is to apply coconut oil to a corner of a clean washcloth and rub it on the teeth. A bonus regarding coconut pulling? Coconut oil has antimicrobial properties, so it’s great for protecting and cleaning your gums as well.
