Although there are many options  to whiten teeth, all of the kits you can purchase over the counter are loaded with harmful chemicals. The chemical tooth whiteners typically contain coal tars, aspartame, aluminum, floride and benzene.  The over the counter bleaches also have a very high acidity and are very abrasive which can cause damage to teeth, tooth pain and/or sensitivity, and damage the enamel. Not only are these chemicals harmful to your teeth and gums, the toxic chemicals often leak from the trays or strips and are swallowed or absorbed. As a result of the dangerous side effects and hazards with over the counter whitening, many are now opting to choose methods to naturally whiten teeth.
I cannot speak from personal experience or make gurantees, but from what I understand it is *generally* considered safe IF the cap is properly placed. I do not see how coconut oil would loosen up a well placed cap, but you’ll still find some people that feel it’s caused a problem for them. Fillings also have somewhat of a shelf life-that is, they won’t last for your lifetime. If you’ve had a filling for awhile (say, ten years) it could be hiding decay or loose or chipped and need to be replaced anyways.

I have been using the bass toothbrush for a while and love it!! It has helped my gums a lot. I am also using it on my dog. I know weird 😉 right? But he is a terrier cross and had build up on the canine teeth as well as some of the others. So to save him from having to go to the vet for cleaning I started using the Bass brush on him with coconut oil. At first there was bleeding but now after a couple of months teeth are white and no more bleeding. Does he wag his tail with joy when I get out the toothbrush ? NO, but he doesn’t run either. He acts like it actually feels good. Just remember not to use baking soda as it doesn’t do well with dogs and be careful with essential oils. So to be safe I just use the coconut oil.
The baking soda works on the enamel of the teeth to lift away the staining while the citric acid in the lemon juice provides a natural bleaching action. You can make a baking soda paste by adding some water to it, and use on your toothbrush, or you can blend the baking soda with your toothpaste. Step1 Mix baking soda and the juice from a fresh squeezed lime, you want to use enough lime juice to bring the baking soda to the consistency of a paste. You can use baking soda, instead of salt, to make it more effective. Different theories exist on the benefits of adding lemon juice or strawberries to baking soda for teeth whitening. All you have to do is take a little of baking soda and make a paste by mixing it with some water and a dash of salt.
The reason oil pulling works to help whiten teeth is similar to what oil is doing in your car’s engine.  Think about it.  When the oil in your car is changed, the clean oil going in is, well, clean.  And the used oil that leaves your car is all gunky.  That gunk is any waste from the engine running being gathered up and removed from the engine by the oil.
When buying from a store, check the ingredient list to avoid sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). SLS is an artificial detergent that can cause sensitivity and mouth ulcers. It is used as a foaming agent in many toothpastes also. Instead, choose a mouthwash with a natural emulsifier like vegetable oil, sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), or sodium chloride (salt). Plant extracts such as peppermint, sage, cinnamon and lemon help freshen your breath.

If I were in the shoes of a person with this situation, I would exhaust natural methods first before shifting to bleaching. For example, I’d do a ’30 day oil pulling’ commitment for myself. Everyday for a month, I’d oil pull and take ‘before and after’ photos so I could see the changes. That way, if I still wasn’t satisfied with the whiteness, I would know that I had tried less invasive strategies prior to choosing a method that may challenge my teeth.

As oil pulling doesn’t involve any of these methods of increasing the stimulation of the amalgam, I see no reason to avoid oil pulling with amalgam fillings. To add to that, even if oil pulling stimulated the mercury to liberate, the fact is you are oil pulling to capture toxins and remove them from the body. Now, I realize that I’m assuming that oil in the mouth would help tie up any ‘extra’ mercury liberated and I don’t know if this is true. But it seems reasonable to me to think that IF more mercury is liberated from oil pulling that the oil/process itself would help bind the vapor and you’d spit it out.
The antibiotic tetracycline causes gray teeth in children whose teeth are still developing. Antibacterial mouthwashes that contain chlorhexidine or cetylpyridinium chloride can also stain teeth. Some antihistamines, antipsychotic drugs, and blood pressure medications cause tooth stains, as can iron and excess fluoride. If bleaching doesn't help, ask your dentist about dental bonding, in which a tooth-colored material is applied to teeth.
Not only is it bad for your health, smoking is one of the worst offenders when it comes to staining teeth. Tobacco causes brown stains that penetrate the grooves and pits of tooth enamel. Tobacco stains can be hard to remove by brushing alone. The longer you smoke, the more entrenched the stains become. Smoking also causes bad breath and gingivitis (gum disease), and increases the risk of most types of cancer.
H2O2 shouldn’t be used orally if you have amalgam fillings as it reacts and releases the mercury vapors!! I also have heard that the inside of a banana peel works to whiten (also GREAT for itchy insect bites) and activated charcoal…apply from capsule with a designated brush, leave on for a few minutes then rinse. It is said to stain sink, clothing, brush, but whitens teeth really well…just wear a black top!
Are these remedies going to guarantee ridiculously white teeth within a week? No. You may start to see a difference, but it won’t be as instant as the commercial products. In the end, will your teeth be so white people squint when you open your mouth? No. And I like it better that way. I’ve found that since using these my teeth are indeed whiter, my mouth overall feels healthier and it doesn’t look like I bleached the life out of myself. We live in a world where photo-shopped faces (and teeth) and make-up covered celebrities set the standard for how we look, which makes life hard for people who like, well, real people. As a result we seem to forget what’s good for ourselves, and spend a ton of money just to look like the ideal. By going natural here, you can save the money for something else, feel better about yourself, and have a healthier mouth (and health is what, in the end, creates real beauty.)
We are told that conventional teeth whitening (bleaching) is safe from experts.  Yet others warn of the risks of conventional teeth whitening.  Much of the confusion stems from the fact that the ‘facts’ around teeth whitening have been blurred intentionally.  Then we hear how Julia Roberts only uses baking soda to keep her smile bright.  But is baking soda even a safe option?
I grew up using Crest with fluoride, brushing within 5 minutes after finishing a meal… (I’ve only ever had three cavities, one of which the dentist gave me when he jabbed his pick into a molar.) After about 30-35 years my teeth began to get really sensitive, so I switched to the various sensitive toothpastes, again with fluoride. About two years ago (I’m almost 59 now), I began reading about fluoride’s effects on teeth and the body, including how FLUORIDE STAINS TEETH YELLOW/BROWN. So I switched to Tom’s no-fluoride toothpaste. I don’t know if it’s just wishful thinking, or an actuality, but I believe my teeth are getting whiter – and I still drink a quart of hot regular black tea (4 teabags’ worth in a Mason jar) every morning! There’s natural fluoride in the tea, but cutting out the fluoride toothpaste has made a world of difference AND my teeth aren’t sensitive anymore, either! I think the sensitivity was also brought on by all that fluoride! Any time I tried to switch off the sensitive pastes to a regular toothpaste, or even between brands of the sensitive types, the inner lining of my mouth would slough off in sheets (as in peeling skin after a bad sunburn), my teeth would just throb, and I’d go back to the sensitive paste. When I went to the Tom’s, my mouth lining was fine, my teeth never hurt, and they seem to be getting whiter! HOORAY!!!
I’ve struggled with staining/yellowish teeth for quite some time due to my “rough” enamel (which my hygienist diagnosed, explaining that it tends to grab onto stains). A good cleaning at the dentist’s would always restore my teeth to their normal whiteness but the yellowing would return quickly and no amount of activated charcoal, oil pulling or baking soda would help. I decided to try baking soda brushing followed by coconut oil pulling twice daily after my most recent cleaning, which was just before this past Christmas. And I’m thrilled to report that my regimen is working! My teeth still feel very clean and look shiny and white (in a normal way, not blindingly white of course). I used whitening strips in my 20s to achieve this but they made my teeth horribly sensitive. I’m so happy to have found a solution to this frustrating and embarrassing issue! I simply brush with a pinch of baking soda, concentrating on my front teeth, and then rinse and swish with coconut oil for 10-15 min, morning and night. It really works. 🙂
Avoiding smoking cigarettes, drinking too much coffee and/or soda, improving your oral hygiene overall, and eating a healthy diet can all also help prevent yellow teeth. If you do regularly drink staining beverages, do so through a straw and try to cut back. Try to drink more plain water after eating or drinking something staining or acidic to help reduce the negative effects.
