I simply dip my toothbrush into some powdered charcoal that I keep in a small jar on my counter and brush as normal. Another way that will produce results more quickly is to mix a teaspoon of charcoal powder into some water and swish with it for a few minutes. Then, spit the water and leave the remaining charcoal in the mouth for a few minutes so that it has time to bind to stains.

Fight plaque with coconut oil and mint leaves. Coconut oil is a natural emulsifier which helps clean your teeth, reduce stains and fight off plaque and cavity causing bacteria.[19] Mix a small amount of mashed peppermint or spearmint leaves (approx. 1–2 grams) with two to three tablespoons of coconut oil to use as a whitening paste or mouthwash. I took tetracycline in the 70’s and ended up with a permanent yellowish color to my teeth. Lately I have been brushing my teeth with tooth gel (not toothpaste) and a dipping of the toothbrush in a little hydrogen peroxide at the same time. Cigarettes and chewing tobacco are harmful to your oral health as they can cause stained teeth, gum disease, oral cancer, slow healing after a tooth extraction or surgery which increases the risk of dry socket, a dulled sense of taste and smell and bad breath.[14] Quitting is the only way to decrease your risk of these and other-tobacco related health problems.
The baking soda and lemon juice works but it is best done by mixing fresh on a daily basis and not by storing since the acid in the lemon and most of the other properties of the lemon mixed with the baking soda effect the way the paste performs. Try it for a week then give it a break though since you don’t want to damage the enamel of your teeth. It definitely made my white!
Dr. Hulda Clarke has told us that oil dissolves metal. That would be the concern for me with holding oil in contact with amalgam fillings for extended periods of time, rather than supposing the oil creates a mercury vapour. I would be concerned at the potential amount of dissolved metals which might be absorbed by the oral mucosa during oil pulling, day after day. Until there is a study conducted on this matter or until my amalgam restorations are removed, I would rather follow a precautionary principle and avoid the oil pulling. – Maggie
Xylitol from birch is the best. Shelly, the role of xylitol in reversing tooth decay is that it helps correct the ph in your mouth. This is most important for anyone who has any metal fillings, retainers or other dental work. I’ve healed a cavity naturally by using xylitol as a part of my oral health routine. It is not a cure all, and xylitol from corn is not the same as xylitol from birch bark. With any metal work in your mouth, you are almost ensuring you will need more dental work, unless you work very hard to keep the ph of your mouth correct.

Thanks for the supportive words. It’s fine to oil pull with amalgam fillings. It’s important to grasp that amalgam fillings off gas 24/7. They give off more mercury vapor when stimulated. Most common ‘stimulants’ are hot drinks, brushing, dental cleanings, and chewing. I really don’t think that oil pulling would increase the risk of mercury vapor. And even if it did, my guess is the oil would tie it up and you spit out the mercury with the oil.


There is a teeth cleaner for animals on the market by Virbac. I kept asking my one vets office how come they had this product with xylitol on the shelf. They said a little would be fine. WRONG! After my second visit and seeing it still there, I mentioned it again. They said they would look into it. MY third visit it was gone. This vet office has many new student vets under the main vet and they should KNOW BETTER. Please look further into this for humans, and do put warnings about it harming animals in your blogs, if you haven’t already. Thanks.
Further research I’ve done on this showed that activated charcoal can actually be helpful in changing the pH and health of the mouth, and as such is effective in avoiding cavities and killing the bad bacteria present in tooth decay and gingivitis. For this reason, I now suggest and use it as part of my remineralizing protocol for teeth, along with my remineralizing toothpaste.

Mix it up, put it on your teeth and after 2 minutes you will have whiter teeth (If your teeth is not completely yellow). I had discolorated teeth. To oil pull, simply put a spoonful of coconut oil in your mouth and swish it between your teeth for five to 20 minutes, or add a few drops to your toothbrush and brush it on. Another oral care option is to apply coconut oil to a corner of a clean washcloth and rub it on the teeth. A bonus regarding coconut pulling? Coconut oil has antimicrobial properties, so it’s great for protecting and cleaning your gums as well.
