Turmeric powder can also help lighten the color of your teeth. It is naturally antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, which can also help with inflamed gums. Dip your toothbrush into the powder and brush for about 2-3 minutes. Rinse well and follow with your regular toothpaste. This can also be done twice a week. I don’t like the flavor of turmeric, so I combine it with orange essential oil to enhance the flavor. (Find organic turmeric root powder here.)
If you have only minimal staining, whitening toothpaste is clearly the easiest way to whiten your teeth at home. Brushing two to three times a day can whiten your teeth four to five shades after about a month of consistent use. Formulas for tooth whitening toothpaste are all about equivalent in effect, but kids under 16 should not use them. They can cause irritation to the gums and teeth of younger kids.
P.S. For people who think this is acidic and eats away your enamel: You first of all have three layers of enamel, secondly if you did science you would have done an experiment in which you neutralize a base (sodium hydroxide) with an acid (hydrochloric acid) and when the two mix they neutralize to be neither acidic or basic but neutral. This is the same principle and that’s why there is far more baking soda to make sure the ph is more basic than acidic.
Whitening strips revolutionized the industry 10 years ago, as researchers figured out how to impregnate hydrogen peroxide on a polyethylene strip that the user places directly on the teeth. This product has existed in several iterations over the years. The various types of strips have differed in terms of the level of hydrogen peroxide in the gel to modifications in the shape and thicknesses of the strip. The efficacy is excellent for an OTC product, but you must be cautious not to burn your fingers or rest the strip on the gums, as this will cause irritation over time. If you are patient and compliant, you’ll see results in a few weeks. This method is best if you have two weeks to whiten.
A friend just told me about the “pulling” with Coconut Oil. She said it kills bacteria and whitens teeth. I have fairly white teeth, but I drink 3 cups of tea every morning, and I have places where I had tea stains. Didn’t want to use the expensive whiteners, and end up with the “fake” and almost “blue/white” looking teeth I see too much of. Bought a $5.99 jar of organic coconut oil at TJ Maxx yesterday. I spoon about 1/2 tablespoon into my hand, soften it up, then put the paste on my toothbrush. After one day and only 2 brushings, the tea stains are GONE. I’m sold !!!!!!!
As one dentist reporting for the Dentistry IQ website puts it, “It is a misnomer that whiter teeth are the same as healthy teeth, since tooth color has very little to do with the health of the tooth. The consumer perception, though, is that white teeth equal a healthy mouth, and perception is reality.” (1) Here’s the good news: Below I explain several home remedies that help naturally whiten your teeth, while also improving overall oral hygiene. The kind of toothpaste you use plus regular brushing and flossing, using baking soda , coconut oil pulling, and tooth-healthy diet can all whiten your teeth naturally — in addition to offering benefits like antibacterial and antiseptic protection.
