Research has shown that teeth-whitening products can damage the teeth by removing too much enamel. Conventional whitening strips, and other whitening products, contain a gel with the active ingredient carbamide peroxide, which breaks down into hydrogen peroxide and a waste product called urea. Constant application of whitening strips has been shown to cause erosion of enamel over time and also promote tooth sensitivity, especially when eating hot and cold liquids or acidic foods.
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral found in water. Toothpastes with fluoride help prevent tooth decay by strengthening your tooth enamel and fighting away bacteria that cause cavities. Fluoride toothpaste is also recommended for toddlers and children but in a lower percentage. Too much fluoride can weaken the enamel. I have been using the bass toothbrush for a while and love it!! It has helped my gums a lot. I am also using it on my dog. I know weird 😉 right? But he is a terrier cross and had build up on the canine teeth as well as some of the others. So to save him from having to go to the vet for cleaning I started using the Bass brush on him with coconut oil. At first there was bleeding but now after a couple of months teeth are white and no more bleeding. Does he wag his tail with joy when I get out the toothbrush ? NO, but he doesn’t run either. He acts like it actually feels good. Just remember not to use baking soda as it doesn’t do well with dogs and be careful with essential oils. So to be safe I just use the coconut oil.
I know this sounds absolutely mad (I thought it was crazy too when I first read about it) but rinsing your mouth with coconut oil (called ‘oil pulling’) is a unique, old, remedy that people swear by to help whiten teeth. It doesn’t sound like the most pleasant thing in the world, but I actually don’t mind the taste, and I think it does make a difference in the color of your teeth. It won’t make a difference by “bleaching” per say, but lauric acid in coconut oil can rid your teeth of bacteria found in plaque that can make them yellow. It is also supposed to promote gum health, and help keep your breath fresh.

7. Drink with a Straw: This last method of naturally whitening teeth is more of preventative measure. Drinking through a straw can help you avoid many stains as teeth with have less contact with damaging drinks or substances. This can be very useful especially if you drink tea and/or coffee which can increases surface stains on teeth. You can find many options for glass and stainless steel straws online.
If I were in the shoes of a person with this situation, I would exhaust natural methods first before shifting to bleaching. For example, I’d do a ’30 day oil pulling’ commitment for myself. Everyday for a month, I’d oil pull and take ‘before and after’ photos so I could see the changes. That way, if I still wasn’t satisfied with the whiteness, I would know that I had tried less invasive strategies prior to choosing a method that may challenge my teeth.
I think that using baking soda is a time honored classic. I have heard all growing up that it would be a good alternative to toothpaste and could help keep them whiter. So, I do brush with it every now and then, I just hate the taste. I will have to try some of your other suggestions though. The most intriguing being the use of clay powder. Thanks.

I grew up using Crest with fluoride, brushing within 5 minutes after finishing a meal… (I’ve only ever had three cavities, one of which the dentist gave me when he jabbed his pick into a molar.) After about 30-35 years my teeth began to get really sensitive, so I switched to the various sensitive toothpastes, again with fluoride. About two years ago (I’m almost 59 now), I began reading about fluoride’s effects on teeth and the body, including how FLUORIDE STAINS TEETH YELLOW/BROWN. So I switched to Tom’s no-fluoride toothpaste. I don’t know if it’s just wishful thinking, or an actuality, but I believe my teeth are getting whiter – and I still drink a quart of hot regular black tea (4 teabags’ worth in a Mason jar) every morning! There’s natural fluoride in the tea, but cutting out the fluoride toothpaste has made a world of difference AND my teeth aren’t sensitive anymore, either! I think the sensitivity was also brought on by all that fluoride! Any time I tried to switch off the sensitive pastes to a regular toothpaste, or even between brands of the sensitive types, the inner lining of my mouth would slough off in sheets (as in peeling skin after a bad sunburn), my teeth would just throb, and I’d go back to the sensitive paste. When I went to the Tom’s, my mouth lining was fine, my teeth never hurt, and they seem to be getting whiter! HOORAY!!!
Floss your teeth regularly. Flossing at least once a day helps remove plaque from the areas between your teeth where your toothbrush can’t reach as plaque that is not removed eventually hardens into tartar and can lead to gum disease. Keep in mind that flossing may cause some discomfort at first but should not be painful either. If you floss too hard, you can damage the tissue between your teeth. A friend just told me about the “pulling” with Coconut Oil. She said it kills bacteria and whitens teeth. I have fairly white teeth, but I drink 3 cups of tea every morning, and I have places where I had tea stains. Didn’t want to use the expensive whiteners, and end up with the “fake” and almost “blue/white” looking teeth I see too much of. Bought a $5.99 jar of organic coconut oil at TJ Maxx yesterday. I spoon about 1/2 tablespoon into my hand, soften it up, then put the paste on my toothbrush. After one day and only 2 brushings, the tea stains are GONE. I’m sold !!!!!!!
I called many American Companies like mountain rose herbs , redmond clay ,aztec clay and when I asked them about lead in their clay they said that every clay comes from the earth and that is why there is tiny amount lead in the clay, but it occurs naturally so it is bind with other elements in the clay and does not leak in the human body , so the human body can not absorb the naturally occuring lead in clay.
