In the morning, before you brush your teeth, scoop out a tablespoon or a little less (depending on the size of your mouth) of coconut oil. You can either soften it, or just put it in your mouth (I usually do the latter, and just let it soften.) Push, swish, and “pull” the oil through and around your teeth for 10-15 minutes, then spit it out, rinse with water, and brush your teeth.
Whitening toothpastes usually contain mild abrasives that are typically mineral compounds such as magnesium carbonate, hydrated aluminum oxides and calcium carbonate. These help remove surface stains that cause yellowing and help you to achieve a brighter tooth surface. Whitening toothpastes also often contain a small percentage of hydrogen peroxide, a bleaching agent that helps remove stains.
Whitening strips revolutionized the industry 10 years ago, as researchers figured out how to impregnate hydrogen peroxide on a polyethylene strip that the user places directly on the teeth. This product has existed in several iterations over the years. Terri, it really is 10 to 15 minutes. During that time, your mouth will get fuller and fuller as more of your natural saliva is generated and added to the oil already in your mouth – by the end of the oil pulling session, you will have twice as much in your mouth as the tablespoon you start with, and this can be hard at first. I had to work up to that tablespoon to be able to keep it in my mouth for 10 minutes; I started with about a half tablespoon.
You can also whiten your teeth at home with gels that are placed in mouth guards and worn at night. This is often the same procedure a dentist uses to whiten your teeth, but the peroxide level is weaker in over the counter kits. Further, mouth guards are custom made for people at the dentist. Finding a mouth guard that fits properly may be problematic with over the counter sets.
I have been using the bass toothbrush for a while and love it!! It has helped my gums a lot. I am also using it on my dog. I know weird 😉 right? But he is a terrier cross and had build up on the canine teeth as well as some of the others. So to save him from having to go to the vet for cleaning I started using the Bass brush on him with coconut oil. At first there was bleeding but now after a couple of months teeth are white and no more bleeding. Does he wag his tail with joy when I get out the toothbrush ? NO, but he doesn’t run either. He acts like it actually feels good. Just remember not to use baking soda as it doesn’t do well with dogs and be careful with essential oils. So to be safe I just use the coconut oil.
I cannot speak from personal experience or make gurantees, but from what I understand it is *generally* considered safe IF the cap is properly placed. I do not see how coconut oil would loosen up a well placed cap, but you’ll still find some people that feel it’s caused a problem for them. Fillings also have somewhat of a shelf life-that is, they won’t last for your lifetime. If you’ve had a filling for awhile (say, ten years) it could be hiding decay or loose or chipped and need to be replaced anyways.
Malic acid in apples boosts saliva to wash away acids. Toothpastes with bromelain, a compound in pineapple, help whiten teeth. But there's no evidence that eating these fruits will make your grin gleam. Skip the strawberries, too. A study in Operative Dentistry found that brushing with a mixture of them and baking soda had no whitening effects. Even worse, the citric acid in strawberries can break down enamel, the outer shell of your tooth.

Not only is it bad for your health, smoking is one of the worst offenders when it comes to staining teeth. Tobacco causes brown stains that penetrate the grooves and pits of tooth enamel. Tobacco stains can be hard to remove by brushing alone. The longer you smoke, the more entrenched the stains become. Smoking also causes bad breath and gingivitis (gum disease), and increases the risk of most types of cancer.
Avoiding smoking cigarettes, drinking too much coffee and/or soda, improving your oral hygiene overall, and eating a healthy diet can all also help prevent yellow teeth.
